Accomplish more; use the right software for your business
It's amazing to think the word “software” dates only to 1957, when John W. Tukey first coined the phrase to describe the process by which computer systems, programs and data interface with each other. Starting in the 1980's, application software (e.g. Word, Excel and etc.) became available to everyone, sold in mass-produced packages through retailers.

Now software choices are endless. Take a stroll in your local business supply store and you will see endless racks of software for a variety of needs and entertainment purposes. However, the major user of application software continues to be businesses, to automate all sorts of daily functions. Are you using the right software for you business? Are there areas of your business that could use a better product? Has a department out-grown your current application software?

Software types to consider

Application software supports a specific process or a set of interlinked processes. Examples include financial programs, operational programs that cover floor operations, sales force automation, or supply chain management.

Infrastructure software supports a business application. Types of infrastructure software include middleware (software that interacts across hardware and network environments), messaging (e-mail and collaboration software), and storage, security, and network management tools. None of these tools by themselves provide a unique business value. When they are combined, however, these tools provide the infrastructure that supports the software programs that run a business.
